3 Effective Clinical Treatments for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious sleeping disorder that can lead to potential psychological disorders and complexities. There are several types of sleep apnea such as obstructive, central, and complex sleep apnea and the treatment for sleep apnea is dependent on the type of disorder you have.

Most people think that clinical treatment is the only effective treatment to cure sleep apnea but that is not true. Clinical treatments can produce no results as in case of mild sleep apnea. So you must identify the symptoms and the intensity of this disorder and then opt for treatments.

Several effective therapies can help you overcome this inveterate disorder which can hamper your regular life and health. Clinical treatment for sleep apnea is a slow process but produces effective results.

Some of the most widely applied clinical treatments are as follows:

1. CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
This is the best therapy if you are in a moderate stage of sleep apnea. This therapy mainly uses a machine to deliver air pressure through a mask when you are sleeping. With CPAP, the air pressure is greater than the pressure of the air surrounding you so it is enough to keep your airway passages open. It helps you to breathe uninterruptedly while you are sleeping.

2. Oral appliances
The use of oral appliances is the most common and effective treatment for sleep apnea. It keeps your throat open to take enough air to breathe. Oral appliances are easy to use and you can get them from your dentist. There are many types of oral appliances used in sleep apnea; you just have to choose one according to your criteria or what is working for you. Once you have selected a suitable appliance, you need to use it for at least one year to overcome this disorder.

3. Surgery
Surgery could be the last option of treatment for sleep apnea if other treatments did not work you. You should go through other clinical treatments for at least three or four months; you can consult a doctor for surgery in case the symptoms are not reduced.

There are several surgical options for you which can include:

  • Tissue removal is a surgery that removes tissue from the back of your mouth and top part of your throat which can prevent vibration of your throat.
  • Jaw repositioning can be another option for you to overcome this sleeping disorder. In this procedure, the doctor repositions your jaw and enlarges the space behind your tongue and your soft palate.
  • If you are at a severe stage of sleep apnea, then you must go for tracheostomy which is also known as creating a new air passageway. During this surgery, the doctor makes an opening in your neck and fits a metal or plastic tube in it through which you can breathe uninterruptedly.

If your sleep apnea is severe, you must not neglect it as it can create problematic consequences. You should consult a doctor and tell them about your symptoms to get a better diagnosis of this sleeping disorder.
