Foods That are Harmful for Cats

Everyone wants to keep their cats happy by giving them healthy, rich, and nutritious food. Besides giving your cat healthy cat treats (i.e., Bully Sticks), you also want to share your own food with your cat. Eating and sharing the same food with your feline friend is something every cat owner looks forward to.

Your cat is very selective about human foods as its taste buds are unable to understand a sweet taste, and such foods also may be very dangerous for them. The substance, theobromine, which is involved in the making of chocolates, may cause severe heart problems, muscle tremors, and seizures to your pet cat. Unlike dogs, cats do not pounce on human food; instead, they turn their heads if the smell or the choice of the food is not according to their preference. You might think that you are supplying healthy food to the cat, but it might actually be dangerous for your cat and give your cat stomach issues. So, always think about your cat’s stomach before giving any food that you assume to be one of the healthy cat treats. The list below shows a few food items that could be harmful to your cat.

1. Tuna, seafood, liver, and raw meat may lead to poisoning
Usually, the intake of tuna fish does not harm cats; however, giving too much for a prolonged period may be harmful and could lead to poisoning. Raw seafood, when gulped, may cause a deficiency of thiamine, which is an important B complex vitamin. In the same way, a little bit of liver is not dangerous for cats, but, if taken regularly for too long, it may result in a deficiency of vitamin A. If at all you want to give meat, give cooked meat, as cooking destroys bacteria. Uncooked meat could have harmful substances that can cause diseases.

2. Keep your cat away from dairy products and caffeine
Cats cannot withstand the lactose content in the dairy from cows, goats, sheep, or other cats, which may cause several stomach problems like vomiting and diarrhea. Thus, it is a misconception that all cats love milk, be it from any source. It’s best to supply your cat with healthy sweet treats bought from the vet, once in a month, which they will cherish throughout the night.

Cats dislike caffeine in beverages as it hinders their breathing, causes tremors and seizures, and increases palpitation. So you should refrain from giving them caffeine products or drinks.

3. Major hindrances due to the intake of onion, garlic, and alcohol
Your cat will not eat garlic, chives, shallots, and onions as they are rich in a compound called thiosulphate that destroys red blood cells, resulting in a serious ailment, anemia.

A small amount of alcohol may be very dangerous to your cat, which, if consumed, may result in hazardous effects like coma and respiratory problems.

The above food items are harmful to cats. Every healthy cat treat has nutritious values that help it to grow correctly and in a healthy manner. Therefore, every person should be careful when he/she has a cat as a pet. Also, choose cat treats wisely and give your cats a complete package of nutrients.
