How to Prevent Meningitis

Meningitis is an umbrella term that refers to any condition that causes inflammation of the meninges. Even though anyone can get affected by this condition, it more commonly occurs among infants and teens.

Some of the types of meningitis are considered to be quite dangerous as they can lead to numerous life-threatening complications. However, with some preventive measures, you can easily protect yourself and your child from this condition.

The following are some of the ways to prevent meningitis:

1. Get vaccinated
Getting vaccinated is one of the methods to keep yourself safe. Currently, there are two types of vaccines available against meningitis.

As viral meningitis is common and more likely to affect teenagers, health specialists generally ask parents to get their children vaccinated within the age of 11 to 12. Also, it is especially important to get vaccinated if you live in a dorm, as this can prevent the spread of the infection.

2. Avoid direct contact with infected people
Certain types of meningitis, such as bacterial and viral meningitis, can affect you if you have prolonged contact with an infected person. Some forms of meningitis also spread through sneezing or coughing. As a result, it is advised to stay away from people suffering from this condition. However, it is also worth noting that bacteria or viruses known to cause meningitis cannot live outside the body. Therefore, you will not get infected by meningitis if you breathe the same air as the affected person.

3. Wash your hands thoroughly
Like most diseases, the meningitis viruses can also get into your bloodstream through your hands and mouth. To prevent this, you should wash your hands frequently, especially after changing your child’s diaper or using the bathroom. Some health specialists also advise people to scrub hands well for a few seconds before drying them with a clean piece of cloth.

4. Strengthen your immune system
A healthy immune system can help you to prevent some types of meningitis. You should strengthen your immune system by following healthy diet plans and getting enough sleep. You should also consider quitting smoking and drinking to improve your overall health.

Almost all the forms of meningitis are dangerous and can lead to severe health complications. If you have been in close contact with an affected person, call your doctor and get tested before it’s too late.
