Various Factors Responsible for Causing Low Libido in Men
A lack of interest in sexual activity is termed as low libido. Though a person’s interest in sexual activity might fluctuate at different points in time, it could turn into a serious issue that affects other areas of their life, like stress, relationship problems, or their overall wellbeing. Many times, due to lack of awareness or the taboos associated with sexual activity, people refrain from discussing it or getting help for this treatable condition. The following are some of the possible causes of low libido in men.
1. Lower levels of testosterone
Testosterone is an important male hormone involved in building bone mass and muscles, and for stimulating the production of sperms. The level of testosterone is related to the sex drive in men. Though a decrease in this hormone level is normal when a person ages, a sudden decrease can cause a low libido. In such a situation, one must consult a doctor for their next course of action.
2. Depression
Depression is not only one of the causes of low libido, but it also affects various aspects of a person’s life. Low libido can also occur as a side effect of various antidepressants. A doctor can prescribe an alternate medication or change the doses of the medication they are using.
3. Stress
Stress can affect hormone levels, which in turn can reduce sexual desire in men. Arteries can also get narrow when a person is experiencing stress, which can restrict the blood flow, thereby leading to the development of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
4. Medication
Various medications are responsible for reducing the levels of testosterone in men. Therefore, these can be considered as some of the causes of low libido in men.
The medications that affect the testosterone hormone levels include:
- Corticosteroids
- Chemotherapy or radiation therapies involved in cancer treatments
- Opioid medications for relieving pain, such as oxycodone, morphine, etc.
- Hormones used for treating prostate cancer
- Some antifungal medication
- Certain steroids used for increasing muscle mass in athletes
If any medication is affecting the level of testosterone in males, they must consult their physician for an alternative.
5. Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
Restless leg syndrome is a situation where a person cannot resist the urge to move their legs. Studies showed that people experiencing this syndrome are at a high risk of developing erectile dysfunction in comparison to others. This can further decrease sexual interest in men. Additionally, people who experience frequent episodes of this syndrome might also become impotent.
6. Chronic illness
Owing to various chronic health conditions, men can lose their interest in sexual activities. Besides, disease such as cancer can also lower sperm count in men. Other forms of health complications that act as causes of low libido in men are obesity, chronic lung, liver, kidney and heart failure, type 2 diabetes, higher levels of cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.
7. Too much or too little exercise
A study showed that men who exercise a lot are more likely to experience low libido. On the other hand, men who never do any form of exercise can develop various forms of health issues which might eventually lead to a lower sex drive. Regular exercise can help in maintaining overall health and avoid the development of health issues that can affect sex drive.
If low libido is caused as a result of any underlying health condition or choice of lifestyle, one must consult their physician to know about the ways that can boost their libido.
